*How to Best Leverage a Supporter* in Mid-Market or Enterprise Sales Cycles

Generating group consensus is the name of the game in the complex sale, which is typically associated with mid-market and enterprise sales scenarios. No single person makes the decision on the buying side, so it’s important to convert as many stakeholders as possible into supporters. The vendor with the most support, or the right kind of support, will likely win the deal. It’s that simple. If you don’t know how to identify a supporter, read up on How to Know When Someone is a Supporter, Opponent, or Neutral. If you’ve read this, you know there are two types of supporters. 

 

How Can/Should Sales Professionals Leverage Each Type of Supporter?

“Accepting” Supporters

Remember, these types of supporters approve of your solution, and have accepted it as the right choice for the company, over all other solutions, but aren’t exactly head over heels or passionate about it and they certainly won’t stick their necks out for you. Here are the best ways to leverage these supporters:

Maintain Support: 

Your competitor is still involved in the deal. While you’ve already garnered this stakeholder’s acceptance and support, they’re probably only one or two compelling arguments away from supporting an alternative solution. Don’t just walk away from these folks. You may even want to nurture them with content. If it’s not a drip campaign, then at least send them a note every so often with some great customer content. Get them hooked on and excited about becoming your customer.

Convert Low Influence/Low Authority “Receptive” Stakeholders: 

Receptive stakeholders are open to the idea of your solution but haven’t yet firmly decided which solution is best for them. Since the “Accepting” stakeholder has objectively determined your solution is best, they’re in a position to share their findings/insights with others. But since they’re not super passionate (if they were, they’d be labeled as an “advocate”), we don’t want them speaking with someone who has great influence or authority in case they fail. We want to leverage this stakeholder to work with those stakeholders who are receptive, but don’t have significant authority or influence.

Example: Let’s say Sally is a receptive supporter who I know is really struggling with her decision. Simply ask Sally where she’s struggling to draw conclusions. Then pair her with an “Accepting” supporter you know is already in your camp for the specific area Sally is struggling with. Depending on your relationship with the supporter, you can either call up that supporter and ask him or her to speak with Sally or you can write an email to both of them directly: “Hi, Bob. I just had a brief discussion with Sally and it looks like she’s still trying to understand the differences between the various solutions around buyer mapping. I know you went deep on this topic. Would you mind sharing some of your knowledge or spending some time with Sally?”

Education: 

This supporter, again, isn’t a passionate advocate. They’re accepting your solution, likely because they’ve objectively determined it’s the right fit for them. Figure out why it was a right fit for them:“Jim – I feel like you’ve put a lot of thought into the vendor selection process. I really appreciate your attention to detail. Would you mind sharing your findings with me, candidly, so I may learn as well? I promise I’ll keep it to 15/30 minutes as I’m simply trying to learn from you.”

Notice how I complimented them on their attention to detail as well? Little compliments like this can be just what they need to hear to book that time with you. It also increases your likeability with that individual stakeholder, which brings them one step close to becoming an advocate.

Leverage these findings to see if you can run any plays to convert non-supporters.

“Advocating” Supporters

Advocates are the lifeblood of your deal. These stakeholders will sell for you when you’re not present and will sing your praises when asked independently about you or your offering. You want them shouting from the mountaintops, but with the right tone and in front of the right people. 

Also, remember that this is likely a vocal opponent for your competitor and we all know what we do to vocal opponents: NEUTRALIZE THEM! This means your competitor has to either get them outvoted or he’s got to kill their internal credibility. If your advocate is being too vocal, then you run the risk of them coming across as biased, which is what your competitor will say when they attempt to neutralize that stakeholder’s internal credibility. Here’s how we suggest leveraging this types of supporter:

Lay of the Land or Who’s Who in the Zoo: 

Since this person is an advocate, they’re likely willing to coach you through who’s involved, who has biases, and who could throw a wrench in your gears. Advocates should always be willing to give you some intel. If not, they’re probably mislabeled as an advocate.

Access to Power & Influence: 

Hopefully your advocate is well connected. Once you figure out who has power/authority or influence in the deal, find out what kind of relationships your advocates have with each of those important stakeholders. If there are strong, direct relationships, put that note in your back pocket and keep it handy. You can also leverage this person to find out if any of those in power have good relationships with any opponents in the deal. Remember, if the sales rep your competing against is any good, she’s trying to gain access to power as well. 

Competitive Intelligence: 

Most advocates are perfectly willing to share competitive intelligence with you. They might share positioning, slide decks, pricing, etc. Lots of goodies you can leverage in your deal and share with both your sales and product marketing colleagues.

Stakeholder Conversion:

We mentioned leveraging the “Accepting” stakeholders for converting low authority/low influence stakeholders. You want to leverage advocates to convert two additional buckets of stakeholders:

  1. High Influence/High Authority: You only want your advocates speaking with and converting these folks.
  2. Indifferent to Combative Opponents: Stakeholders who are to the left of “Receptive” in the Stakeholder Concentration Curve – The stronger the opponent, the stronger the advocate you’ll need for conversion.

She currently is the Vice President of Operations at Sound and owns go-to-market agency, MB Solutions. Mollie has previously held operations leadership roles at Deel, Syncari, Corteva and Marketo.

She has over 14 years of experience in both B2C and B2B operations and technology. When she is not working, Mollie enjoys spending time with her husband, three small children, and two large dogs.

After serving in The United States Marine Corps, Alex Buckles spent the next two decades as a student of revenue production and an advocate for innovation.

Along the way, he has helped numerous companies achieve double and triple-digit growth by crafting and executing high-performing go-to-market strategies, with co-selling at the center of each.

As a once-advanced technical marketer, an expert sales & partner professional, and a strong customer success advocate, Mr. Buckles understands the impact of these functions aligning not only on revenue production, but on the day-to-day execution of the go-to-market strategy. This concept of revenue-team alignment is what quickly became the foundation of Forecastable back in January of 2018.

In his free time, you’ll find him spending quality time with his children, one of whom is on the autism spectrum. 1 in 36 children in the U.S. are on the spectrum and boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed than girls.

With that in mind, Mr. Buckles plans on dedicating the rest of his life serving those living with autism, through his organization Pathways for Autism. From his perspective, there must be a scalable and financially self-sustaining infrastructure established to put as many individuals with autism as possible on a path towards complete independence as adults.

Dave Govan

Chief Executive Officer, Forecastable, Inc.

Dave Govan is the Chief Executive Officer of Forecastable, Inc., a Privately Owned, Managed Services SaaS business helping Companies improve Collaboration and Sales Productivity with Partners. In his role Dave leads all aspects of the business.

Prior to Forecastable, Dave was the Global Chief Revenue Officer for NetWitness, a $200m business in the CyberSecurity Industry. At NetWitness, Dave led all customer-facing functions including Sales, Marketing, Channels, Professional Services, Customer Support, Customer Success and Sales Operations. In his role Dave assisted the Chairman on hitting EBITDA and Revenue Targets for the new Private Equity Owners after carving the business out from three other businesses at RSA as well as divesting from Dell EMC. Dave created and led a customer-first approach unifying all functions internally and externally to manage the transition and rebuild the organization. Prior to Netwitness, in his first two years at RSA, Dave was RSA’s Chief Revenue Officer of the Americas achieving his Revenue Targets in 2019 and 2020 and grew the business from $400 to $540 million across all Product Lines.

Prior to joining RSA, Dave was Vice President of Sales within the Big Data, IoT and Analytics Division of Hitachi Vantara for two years improving collaboration between Hitachi’s Hardware Sales Organization and his Organization resulting in closing large Software Contracts and achieving Plan. Prior to joining Hitachi, Dave served as Chief Revenue Officer for two early-stage SaaS growth companies, Sailthru and Dynamic Yield in the Marketing Technology space. In each role Dave built SaaS businesses from the ground up and laid the foundation for successful exits. At Sailthru, his Team closed 250 New Logos in 2 ½ years and grew Revenue from $3.7m ARR to $32m ARR Run Rate, increasing AOV by 10x. Prior to Sailthru, Dave founded and operated G2 Strategic Advisory Services full time, for five years helping Technology founders optimize Go-to-Market Strategies and improve Sales and Marketing execution.

Previously, Dave was Chief Revenue Officer of the Americas for VeriSign leading a $200m+ Sales Organization. At VeriSign, Dave turned around the organization and consistently achieved his numbers resulting in a 37% CAGR vs the Industry Standard CAGR of 17%. Prior to VeriSign, Dave worked as Chief Revenue Officer, in the Data Integration space joining Juice Software pre-product and helping the scale to their first Enterprise Customers. Previously, Dave worked at NetPerceptions, market leader in Personalization Technology, as VP of Sales for US East, Canada and LATAM. Prior to NetPerceptions, Dave worked for five years at Oracle Corporation in the Enterprise Major Accounts Organization. In his second year at Oracle, Oracle’s Executive Leadership Team named Dave Global Account Manager of the Year and he was given a double promotion to Regional Sales Manager, his first Sales Leadership role.

Dave started his technology industry sales career at Digital Equipment Corporation, the then 2nd largest Technology Company in the World. At DEC, Dave received excellent training and mentorship which helped him become a successful Major Account Executive, achieving Plan Eight years in a row, including two Top 10% Awards out of 5,000 Reps resulting in six promotions in eight years.

Dave’s professional development includes training by Dr. Jeff Spencer, former Olympian and Author of Champion’s Blueprint, and completion of Executive Training Programs with Dr. Noel Tichy, Director of the University of Michigan’s Global Leadership Program as well as an Executive Leadership Course at Babson College’s Executive Education Center.
